40 Years of Bringing Natural Health Products to the World [Infographic]

Nature’s Sunshine started in 1972, which means this December is the last month we can really celebrate our 40th anniversary. We’ve come a long way from selling out of the first 3,000 capsules of cayenne pepper .

Since then, Nature’s Sunshine has developed hundreds of natural health supplements that literally help people live healthy lives around the world. The development of these products has brought joy and healthy living to people’s day-to-day routines, that is why it is so important for us to make our products the best they can be. The History of Nature’s Sunshine

1972 – Kristine Hughes suggests encapsulating cayenne pepper to make it easier for her husband to take.

1972 – Gene and Kristine’s first batch of 3000 capsules immediately sells out.

1973 – The Hughes buy their first mechanical encapsulator for $80.

1973 – Increased production capacity allows them to expand their product offering from five to 17 products.

1974 – Charles Ung is hired as Director of Quality Control, solidifying the Hughes’ vision of offering only the highest quality herbal and nutritional supplements.

1974 – The Hughes embraced network marketing as a distribution channel, enabling them to expand their reach and grow like never before.

1976 – Nature’s Sunshine became an international company when it opened the Canadian market.

1976 – NSP invested $1.2 million in building its first corporate headquarters, a 36,000 sq. ft. building complete with receiving and production areas, and R&D and QA labs.

1978 – Nature’s Sunshine stock was first listed and began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange. In turn, this may have persuaded other people to buy stocks in other markets, like the air nz stock for example. For Nature’s Sunshine though, this would be just the start.

1979 – New Zealand became Nature’s Sunshine’s second international market.

1981 – NSP expanded by opening the Australian market.

1982 – NSP’s Quality Control department was divided into Quality Assurance, with Jeff Tuttle as Director, and Research and Development, with Calvin McCausland named as Director.

1982 – Nature’s Sunshine’s Customer Service department was organized to help respond to and solve distributor complaints and issues.

1983 – Expansion of the Spanish Fork plant begins, adding 50,000 sq. ft. to the production areas and 20,000 sq. ft. of office space to accommodate growth.

1985 – Nature’s Sunshine organized the Spanish Division to better meet the needs of our growing number of Spanish-speaking distributors.

1989 – Nature’s Sunshine begin operations in the United Kingdom.

1990 – Nature’s Sunshine expanded into Central America by opening the Mexico market.

1992 – NSP Colombia opened for business.

1993 – Latin American expansion continued with the opening of the Venezuelan, Ecuadorian and Peruvian markets.

1994 – The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act is signed into law, granting Nature’s Sunshine and other nutritional supplement manufacturers greater freedom and security.

1994 – Nature’s Sunshine expanded into the Asian region by opening NSP Japan.

1994-1998 – Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and El Salvador became NSP markets over the next five years and continue operating today as NSP Centro America.

1996 – Forbes Magazine ranked Nature’s Sunshine 56th on its list of the 200 Best Small Companies.

1996 – The FDA reported that Americans spent more than $6 billion annually on nutritional supplements.

1997 – NSP invested $21 million in a new expansion of the Spanish Fork plant that more than doubled production capacity and increased quality controls.

1997 – NSP Korea began operations.

1999 – Nature’s Sunshine opened the Russian market.

2001 – May 25, Nature’s Sunshine began operations in the Dominican Republic.

2002 – Nutritional Outlook Magazine names Nature’s Sunshine Manufacturer of the Year.

2008 – NSP Poland becomes our latest international subsidiary.

Today – Nature’s Sunshine celebrates 40 years!
