Liver Cleansing Basics

Liver functions relate to digestion, metabolism, immunity, and the storage of nutrients.  It detoxifies the body and helps with digestion, so the liver is working hard, and it sometimes gets overburdened.

For digestion it produces bile, which makes fats easier for the body to digest.  For metabolism it supports the cells of the body by helping with metabolic processing of things like fats, amino acids, and glucose. The liver stores many essential nutrients and vitamins the body needs in order to provide a constant supply to body tissues.

Basically the liver is key to many aspects of our health, so you need to ask yourself, “Does it need a cleanse?”

If you experience the following signs, you may need to think about doing a liver cleanse:

  1. Occasional bloating
  2. Occasional abdominal discomfort
  3. If your gallbladder has been removed
  4. If you occasionally perspire excessively or overheat easily
  5. If you have itchy or blotchy skin
  6. Occasional fatigue
  7. Consume a high carbohydrate diet
  8. Consume a high percentage of processed or high-sugar foods
  9. Frequently use chemical products on your skin
  10. Exposure to high levels of toxins

So how do you support your body’s detoxification process?

Start by cutting out things like processed and sugary foods, alcohol, carbohydrates, and chemicals.

Consult with a physician, and try a natural detox of consuming whole foods, or try a supplemental detox. According to, when detoxifying, 30-40% of your daily consumption should be raw fruits and vegetables, as they can help digestion with their live enzymes and the vitamins and nutrients they contain. You can also eat naturally fermented foods like sauerkraut, cultured vegetables, yogurt, and kefir.

Your goal should be to help your body naturally detoxify by fueling it with the proper foods. But if you need additional support, a cleanse can be very effective.

After cleansing, support liver health through herbs and nutrients such as Vitamins B, C, and E, beta carotene, and amino acids. A healthy liver supports proper digestion and it can help with overall health.
