What Those Stickers on Produce Say About Your Food

Next time you’re at the grocery store and you want to buy some fresh produce, pay closer attention to those PLU stickers that you have to peel off your fruit and vegetables. They do much more than ell the cashier how much to charge.

What PLU Stickers Mean

Those stickers reveal if your fruit is Conventional, Organic or Genetically Modified:

Conventional produce gets a four-digit number. This means the produce was sprayed with chemical fertilizers, weedkillers, herbicides or fungicides.

Organic produce gets a five-digit number that starts with 9. These numbers ensure that the produce was not treated with chemicals.

Genetically modified produce have a five-digit code that starts with the No. 8. This is produce that where man has intervened by manipulating the genes to produce a larger or brighter colored food. This produce may have been chemically treated.
